The Workstation is a creative digital business centre in Sheffield, converted from a 1930s Art Deco car showroom in the 1990s. Its shared tenant facilities were becoming worn and dated and needed complete refitting, while some additional facilities were also required. We replanned existing areas and identified some underused spaces where new facilities could be inserted, connected to the existing services and without disrupting any tenant workplaces. Working closely with the client we split the works into several phases to ensure The Workstation could continue operating throughout the works, including working around its programme of special events.

The toilets were redesigned as ‘superloos’ each containing a separate toilet and washbasin giving increased privacy. Our design for the refurbishment and reconfiguration of the kitchenettes, toilets and showers throughout all floors is developed from the palette of materials and finishes developed in the refurbishment of the Showroom Cinemas 1 and 2. Phases 1 and 2 were completed in June 2020.
