Courtyard Garden
Sheffield

A back garden courtyard redesigned as outdoor entertaining space

Our design for a courtyard-type garden in Sheffield is based around making a better connection between house and garden, a common problem in the city due to its topography. ... Currently the connection is limited to a steep narrow stair which will be removed and replaced with generous, wide steps, partially planted to bring elements of the garden up to the level of the house. Facing South, the new steps will also act as an informal seating area.

Perimeters are unified by bespoke slatted timber fences which increase privacy and act as a framework for fragrant climbers. A generous planter with bench is created to the back of the garden, facing South which will be planted with low maintenance and high impact shrubs, grasses and perennials for all year interest, with an emphasis on subtle colour, different shades of green and fragrance. Planters for herbs and edibles are located adjacent the new outdoor ‘kitchen’ zone.

Working closely with the client, we are aiming to use as much reclaimed material from the site as possible to rebuild the lower perimeter planters and paved areas.
