We designed Shell Home as a true ‘home for life,’ designed to encourage flexible living and a healthy lifestyle by addressing key issues surrounding current and future housing provision. ... Its design, based on a robust, simple structure allows for unforeseen changes and adaptations over each home’s lifetime. The adoption of plumbed vertical service cores with open-plan floor plates simplifies construction and allows maximum scope for flexibility of layouts. Shell Homes’ external appearance is designed to change to suit its location.

Shell Home is designed to minimise carbon, energy and resource use, both in construction and in use and to minimise utility bills over the life of the house. A close connection between the interiors and the outdoor natural environment is the basis of the house layout with integrated external spaces, green walls and biodiverse green roofs. Daylighting and natural ventilation is embedded in its design.
