The former colliery site is divided into a number of informally linked light touch built and landscape interventions which are intended to allow the visitor to come to an understanding of the site and its immediate surroundings. The form of the interventions are intedned to counterpoint and contrast with the natural environment whilst the materials and textures used will relate to the context.
The development strategy for the site is as a managed sustainable landscape to facilitate use of the site for many differing uses, including a new network of footpaths, trim trails, cycle routes and bridleways, a children's playscape, a new wader scape and associated hides, wildflower meadow, visitor and education centre and multi-purpose barn space.
